Situations When Discovery Learning Does Not Work....
- Ineffective when completely unassisted (when a facilitator is not available or guided activities not possible)
- Reflection is not possible or structured
- Discovery learning is found to have a high degree of cognitive load (mental activity required to remember) on novice students, specifically if students possess little to no experience their cognitive load will be higher and therefore could impair learning
- This should be consideredin designing the program. Perhaps the facilitator (or software) can provide explanatory feedback (along the way) , as opposed to corrective feedback – after the fact.
